Concourt: ‘why no women candidates?’

2013-01-17 00:00

THE Women’s Legal Centre (WLC) has expressed concern that none of the five shortlisted candidates for a Constitutional Court vacancy is a woman.

Said Jennifer Williams, director of the WLC: “It is of great concern that the highest court in the land falls far short of the provisions of Section 174 of the Constitution, which envisions a judiciary that reflects the racial and gender composition of South Africa.

The recent census showed that females made up 51,3% of the population, and having only two women justices in the highest court on constitutional matters was inexcusable, she added.

On the shortlist for the Concourt vacancy are Judge Selby Alan Masibonge Baqwa, Judge Lebotsang

Orphan Bosielo, advocate Jeremy John Gauntlett SC, advocate Mbuyiseli Madlanga SC and Judge Brian Solomon Spilg.

Interviews will be conducted on February 22.
