Consumers warned of ‘Knorrox’ prize scam

2008-03-21 00:00

A Pietermaritzburg man has been the victim of a scam that told him he had won a cash prize in a Knorrox competition, only to find that the man he was told to claim his prize from did not exist.

Unilever yesterday warned people not to give their banking details or ID number to anyone who called them on their mobile phones to inform them that they had won a prize in the Knorrox competition.

Christine Broadhurst, consumer affairs manager for Unilever South Africa, said since late last year several people have called the company to find out how they can claim the prize money they have supposedly won in the false Knorrox competition.

She said mainly Cell C and MTN customers have been targeted.

“We are aware that two males and a female have been calling people and informing them they had won amounts from R5 000 to R30 000,” she said.

Members of the public should telephone the Unilever customer services toll free number 0860 331441 if they became suspicious.

“A member of the public complained he had received a call informing him he had won R15 000 and a food hamper in the Knorrox competition.

The man said he was asked to redeem the prize from a Mr Khumalo at Ukhozi FM.

He spent R200 for transport from Pietermaritzburg to the Ukhozi FM office in Durban only to be told there was no Mr Khumalo at Ukhozi FM.
