Contractors protest non-payment by Msunduzi municipality

2012-03-08 00:00

CONTRACTORS tasked with performing electrical connections and disconnections in the city yesterday downed tools in protest of nonpayment. There are at least seven contractors, who cannot be named for fear of reprisals, contracted to Msunduzi Municipality to disconnect or re-connect electricity for the municipality’s tardy customers. They reportedly perform about 450 disconnections per day.

Yesterday, some of these contractors downed tools, saying they will not be disconnecting any customers until they are paid. They said they have not received any payment for the past two months. One of the contractors is reportedly owed over R50 000.

Brian Zuma, spokesperson for the municipality, said they regretted the delays, saying they were due to important auditing issues.

Zuma said six contractors were paid yesterday and the remaining ones will be paid today.
