Convoy to Cape Town

2008-05-30 00:00

International and local musicians will play along the route between Johannesburg and Cape Town tomorrow, ahead of the World Economic Forum in South Africa.

UK acts that are confirmed include Micachu, Tawiah, Sam Issac, Kelz, Kid Keir, Winumi, Man Like Me, Get Cape Wear Cape Live, Djata Ilebou of Burkina Faso, and Stara Thomas of Tanzania.

Forming part of the SA contingent are Spitmunky, Ewok and the Hyper Men, Josie Field, Aidan Cornhill and Dearly Beloved.

Music and politics collide: no wristbands, no sign of Bono, just local musicians playing with bands from across the globe and demanding an end to injustice.

The convoy will draw attention to a little-known scandal: in the poorest countries in the world, at least one in eight women dies in childbirth, and many more are permanently disabled, because local and international governments do not make them a priority.

The White Ribbon Alliance passes through Durban tomorrow. During the day the convoy will be visiting Cato Manor where there will be a free performance at the Cato Crest Hall from 10.30 am until 1.30 pm. All are welcome.

The evening event will take place at the Willowvale Hotel, Umbilo, at 8 pm. Entrance is R30.
