Cool Colin wraps up emphatic Q-School victory

COLIN Nel wrapped up an emphatic eight stroke victory in the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School on Saturday, carding a five-under par 67 to put the cherry on top of what was an excellent week.

His reward will be a much improved Tour card, and far fewer sleepless nights going into the majority of next season’s tournaments.

“That is the biggest thing, and I already feel that I have learnt so much in my first season,” Nel said.

“Leading a tournament is something new to me, but it has gone quite well,” he added.

His final round — starting with a five-shot lead — could have proved tricky if he had gone out simply to protect his lead, but the Maritzburg Golf Club product finished with a flourish.

“I have started working with a sports psychologist, and she has helped me so much,” he explained.

“I now take each shot as it comes, and I don’t let a bogey get me down as much.”

Nel finished on 21-under after five rounds of intense golf in Bloemfontein, as he led pretty much from start to finish.

“I am really looking forward to next season, but I am also excited about the lucrative stretch coming up now,” he said.

Indeed, this week’s Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek heralds the start of several, big-money events in South Africa.

“Just making the cut at these events ensures a decent payday, so it would be nice to carry my form from Q-School to Leopard Creek.”

Nel headed to Leopard Creek yesterday because — funnily enough — he has to pre-qualify for a slot in Thursday’s field.

He won’t be doing too much of that next season, though.
