Cool it, Mkhize warns ANC

2009-01-09 00:00

ANC provincial chairman Zweli Mkhize yesterday urged party members not to disrupt meetings of rival political parties, saying all political groups should be allowed to organise freely in the province.

Mkhize’s comments came amid reports that there were plans by some ANC members to disrupt a Congress of the People (Cope) rally to be held in Umlazi today, an area considered an ANC stronghold.

“The ANC does not disrupt and the ANC does not get disrupted. We have noted that there are more than 150 parties that have registered with the IEC. They can be as many as they like, but to us they are just opposition. Do not give them exposure by paying attention to them. They get more publicity in the media when next to their small meetings there are [people wearing] ANC t-shirts,” he said.

While urging ANC members to “remain disciplined”, Mkhize also warned members from other political parties not to provoke members of his party.

He was addressing some 800 ANC delegates who convened at Durban’s DLI hall yesterday for the party’s provincial list conference.

KZN is the first province to hold the all important list conference while other provinces have been reported to be unprepared to hold conferences.

A list conference decides on candidates who will represent the party at the national assembly, the provincial legislatures and at the National Council of Provinces after the elections.

KZN delegates yesterday voted for their candidates. The process was expected to produce 80 names on the provincial list, 40 on the NCOP list and 200 on the national list.
