Cop accused of road rage killing appears in court

2014-12-23 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg policeman charged with the “road rage” killing of Kavlin Naidoo (27) last month made another brief appearance in court yesterday.

The case against Sergeant Thobelani Khuzwayo (35) was postponed until March 4 next year pending a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions as to the exact charges he will face.

Khuzwayo was arrested soon after an incident when Naidoo was shot in his stomach and critically injured in the CBD on November 2. It was alleged that the policeman, who was off duty but driving a state vehicle, had pulled in front of the car driven by Naidoo’s brother, Davelin, and stopped.

The state alleges that when Naidoo got out to find out what the trouble was, Khuzwayo allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him.

Naidoo was hospitalised for three weeks before he died of his injuries.

The shooting occurred in front of Naidoo’s fiancée, Sandhani Padayachee, and his brother.

Naidoo’s father, Dev, and mother, Patsy, said they were at court yesterday when the policeman appeared.

Dev told The Witness they will “just wait to see” what transpires in the trial.

Khuzwayo is on R2 000 bail pending his trial.
