A DURBAN police officer is suspected of setting his house alight — killing two of his children — before killing himself with a stab wound to the neck during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The police officer was found dead, stabbed in the neck after two of his daughters, Nondumiso Makhanya (23) and Nonjabulo Makhanya (18), were burnt beyond recognition at their Durban home in Conger Place, Newlands West.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said in a statement that the body of Warrant Officer Thulani Makhanya (52) was found in his neighbour’s yard with burn marks and a stab wound to the right side of the neck. His wife, Cynthia Makhanya (47) and their younger daughter, Nothando (15) were taken to hospital with burn wounds on their bodies. The motive for the killing and arson is unknown at this stage,” said Zwane.

Thulani Makhanya was working at the Durban Court.
