A PIETERMARITZBURG police constable was sentenced on Monday for a murder he committed in Pinetown three years ago.

Constable Mlondolozi Makhathini of Alexandra Road Police Station was sentenced to 15 years in prison at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

Makhathini shot and killed 19-year-old Thamsanqa Abrahams in KwaNdengezi in February 2007.

Makhathini got annoyed when Abrahams yelled at him for speeding on a busy street. Abrahams was with a friend and a young child when she was shot after Makhathini nearly hit them with his vehicle.

“The deceased then yelled at the driver [Makhathini] for driving recklessly in an area where there were kids. The infuriated Makhathini made an about-turn. A confrontation ensued between him and the deceased.

“The constable then pulled out his service piston and shot the deceased in the neck and then fled the scene,” said Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

The ICD investigated the matter.

When he committed the crime, Makhathini was working at Harburg Police Station outside Pietermaritzburg, but was later transferred to Alexandra Road.

Makhathini was convicted on May 25 this year.
