Cop held for allegedly raping suspect

THE job of a midlands police officer is on the line following allegations that he raped a suspect inside the police station he works at on Sunday evening.

The 43-year-old warrant officer had taken in a 21-year-old woman and four others for questioning after they were accused of assaulting a person in Schroeders village on Sunday.

The officer appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

It is alleged that he raped the woman at the police barracks inside the New Hanover police station 36 kilometres outside Pietermaritzburg at about 5 pm.

A source at the police station said the officer, who cannot be named as he has not yet entered a plea on the rape charge, took the woman to the barracks after he had questioned her about the assault.

“When the police officer was arrested he said the woman offered him sexual pleasure in exchange for dropping the assault case. Afterwards, the woman cried rape,” said the source.

After the alleged rape the woman left the police station, but on the following day she returned to the police station to open a case.

The officer was then arrested and taken to the Moutain Rise police station for detention.

Another source said the woman opened the rape case because the other four women had seen her being taken to the barracks, and they had threatened to tell her boyfriend about the sex incident.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident. She could not elaborate on it as she said it is sub judice.

Jeevan said the officer was detained at Moutain Rise to allow the investigation to take place. — WR.
