Cop-killer suspect in court today

2009-04-30 00:00

One of the suspects involved in the Durban shoot-out where two policemen and a truck driver were killed will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court today on murder charges.

The suspect together with four accomplices, two of whom are under guard in hospital, held up a business in Mazeppa Street on Tuesday.

The suspects fled shortly after the robbery into the city centre, but were followed by policemen.

A shoot-out between the suspects and the police ensued. Two policemen were seriously injured. A truck driver, Robert Moshesh, also sustained a bullet wound to the head and died at the scene.

Police reservist Sergeant Afzal Khan and his partner Inspector Mbongiseni Albert Maphumulo were also shot and killed when they entered the building where more suspects were hiding.

Khan, the father of four, was buried on Tuesday night while the funeral arrangements for Maphumulo are still being discussed.

Police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the suspect is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

One suspect is still at large and one was killed during the shoot-out.
