Cop-killer suspects gunned down

A GUNMAN who shot and killed a police officer in Mariannhill last weekend was gunned down by police in the midlands area on Tuesday.

On Sunday, a 24-year-old student constable was shot in the mouth and the police arrested six suspects in connection with the murder, but two suspects escaped. Following a lead, police tracked the two suspects in the Mashingeni area near Taylor’s Halt.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the suspects were hiding out at a house in the area.

“Police raided the house and both suspects produced firearms and fired at the policemen.

“Policemen were then forced to return fire, fatally wounding one and seriously wounding the other”.

The injured suspect was taken to hospital where he is recovering under police guard. It is believed that the dead suspect pulled the trigger in the murder of the constable.

SAPS spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the gang of robbers were terrorising the community in the area.

“The police were reacting to a call about a spate of robberies in the area and when they arrived the gang opened fire and the young constable was hit.”

Budhram said two guns used by the suspects, a .38 special revolver and a 9 mm pistol, were confiscated from the scene.
