Cop, lawyer arrested

2009-02-05 00:00

A Bulwer police officer and the head control prosecutor at Hlanganani Magistrate's Court in the area appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court yesterday afternoon in connection with a charge of corruption.

Lungani Mkhize (34) of Bulwer SAPS, and Sandile Lester Mathonsi (33) were granted bail of R1 000 each and warned to appear in court again on March 5.

They have not been asked to plead to any charges.

The case against them arises from an allegation that they unlawfully demanded payment of R10 000 from the owners of two vehicles that police impounded in the Bulwer area on October 16.

The vehicles were allegedly impounded in the course of an anti-drug operation, but according to sources no drugs were seized from the vehicles.

However, when the owners requested the release of their vehicles, they were allegedly instructed to pay R5 000 per vehicle. Money was allegedly handed over.

The accused were arrested by members of Durban's organised crime unit.
