Cop shoots, kills city vagrant

2008-04-15 00:00

A Pietermaritzburg police inspector shot an allegedly violent vagrant in the city centre yesterday afternoon in what police believe was self defence, although he fired no warning shots.

It is alleged that the shooting followed an altercation between the inspector, whose name is known to The Witness, and the vagrant.

The incident took place at the corner of Pine and Pietermaritz streets.

Inspector Joey Jeevan said the vagrant damaged the inspector’s private vehicle. The uniformed policeman tried to stop him, but the man attacked him with bricks.

"The vagrant also tried to disarm the policeman, which forced the policeman to shoot in self defence. The deceased was shot in the left shoulder.

"After being shot, the man ran for about 100 metres towards Edendale Nursing College before he fell and died," said Jeevan. Jeevan said the inspector had no chance to fire a warning shot.

An investigation to establish whether the inspector should be arrested is taking place.
