Cop shot in Pavillion jewellery store heist

2007-11-16 00:00

An off-duty policeman, Andre Mostert, was critically injured when he attempted to stop their escape. He was hit four times in the torso and was airlifted to St Augustine's hospital where a trauma team was standing by to perform emergency surgery.

Mostert had been walking near the store with his wife when the heist occured. Speaking late yesterday afternoon, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said although the surgery went well and he was stable, Mostert remained in a critical condition.

He said a trail of blood suggested that gang members were also probably shot. There were no other casualties.

“Paramedics worked frantically to try to stabilise the patient while the trauma doctor was on his way in the Netcare medical helicopter. They were absolutely flabbergasted that no more people were injured as the floor was absolutely littered with spent cartridges,” Botha said.

“I am surprised no one else was injured. We were lucky it was a weekday,” said SAPS spokeswoman Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen.

She said police were sifting through footage captured by the Pavilion's CCTV cameras for help in their investigation. There had been no arrests at the time of going to press.

The police recovered one of the getaway cars - a white VW Polo that was hijacked the day before - in Booth Road, one of the main routes leading to the mall.

The gunmen apparently concealed their weapons under their clothing to enter the mall. They managed to steal bags of watches and cash.
