Cop suicide: MEC sad as widow dies

2011-08-09 00:00

THE MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, yesterday expressed his sadness at the death of Cynthia Makhanya, the wife of a policeman who set his home on fire with Cynthia and his three daughters locked inside, at Newlands East, Durban, recently.

After setting the fire, Warrant Officer Thulani Makhanya stabbed himself to death.

After visiting the family last week, Mchunu said he had hoped the widow would survive.

“This is tragic. Losing five family members is painful. After meeting with the family last week, we were all confident that she would recover.”

Makhaya’s death comes after the funeral of her husband and three daughters at the weekend.
