A POLICEMAN’S quick hand in returning fire, responding to what appears to be have been a botched hijacking on a dirt road in Hashini near Taylor’s Halt on Saturday, not only saved his life, but left three of his assailants dead, while two others are expected to appear in court soon.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the policeman is in a serious condition in hospital. He is a member of the detective branch at Taylor’s Halt.

According to Budhram, the off-duty officer is believed to have been visiting family in the area at the time of the incident.

While he was driving on the dirt road, a vehicle with five occupants drove next to his car. One of the occupants opened fire, wounding the police officer in the neck.

He returned fire with his service firearm. “Both vehicles lost control and came to a standstill near each other. It is believed two of the occupants in this vehicle jumped out and fled from the scene,” said Budhram.

Police have arrested two men in their 20s after they were found in hiding in the Magwenyane area. One of the suspects was found to have a gunshot wound believed to have been sustained during the shoot-out.

The deceased have been identified as Phumlani Ngcobo (37), who was the driver of the vehicle; Ndumiso Nyembe (28) and Jabulani Magwenyane (24).
