Cope: Lekota faction wants KZN MPL out

2011-09-06 00:00

A BATTLE between the two Congress of the People (Cope) factions — one aligned to Terror Mosiuoa Lekota and another to Mbhazima Shilowa — is expected to take another turn in KZN following a call by the Lekota faction to have Cope’s only MPL in KwaZulu-Natal, Lucky Gabela, removed.

Cope head of communications Mtatambi Lundi said after the meeting of the provincial working committee aligned to Lekota at the weekend that one the decisions taken was to remove Gabela and provincial secretary Philip Mhongo, who are both aligned to the Shilowa faction.

“KZN Cope leadership is also calling upon Cope national leadership to immediately remove Gabela as the member of the KZN Legislature as he does not take the mandate from the provincial leadership.

“Disciplinary measures will also be taken against comrades who do not subscribe to resolutions taken at the Pietermaritzburg Cope inaugural conference, Gabela, who calls himself the provincial chairperson, and Philip Mhlongo, who still calls himself provincial secretary,” Lundi said.

Mhlongo said it is “wishful thinking” for the Lekota faction to threaten to haul him and Gabela before a disciplinary action and to remove Gabela from the legislature.

“There is no Cope working committee without us and it’s wishful thinking that we will be disciplined or removed from our positions by the renegades who dismissed themselves when they boycotted the elective conference.”
