Cope calls on media to reveal 'Mbeki' source

2009-03-17 00:00

COPE has called on the media to reveal its sources who have claimed that former president Thabo Mbeki is a member of its party.

In a statement released at the weekend, the party said that "mischievous attempts by some in the media and their faceless sources to drag former president Thabo Mbeki into declaring his support for Cope are misplaced".

"Cope has repeatedly stated that Mbeki is not a member of Cope and thus would not be consulted in any matter regarding the organisation," the statement said.

The party said it believes the attempts to be part of a "witch hunt" to hound Mbeki and to use Cope's name to "settle political scores".

"We condemn such attempts and call upon the media to reveal who their sources are," said the statement.
