Copesville: Two hours to fill 20-litre bucket

2014-09-25 00:00

TWO hours — that is how long it takes to fill a single 20-litre bucket of water in Copesville these days.

For the past two weeks the area has been crippled by water shortages after two of the three communal taps used by hundreds of informal settlement residents broke.

“Some community members have no choice but to go and source water from the tap at the police station because that one is working fine,” said a resident who declined to be named as he fears being accused of instigation against councillor Thandi Ndlovu.

The one working tap runs at very low pressure, which means people looking for water have to wait for hours to fill their containers.

“There are now very long queues at the tap because the water is coming out so slowly — it takes two to three hours just to fill one bucket of water.

“Those who cannot wait that long go to the police station where there is one working tap and they draw their water there,” he continued.

He said there was a danger of violence breaking out among residents because of the shortage, as impatient residents steal water from unattended buckets.
