Cops: 19 killed in the line of duty

2008-11-10 00:00

Provincial police spokesman Superintendent Jay Naicker said that 19 policemen have been killed in the line of duty since January.

Top cops Superintendent Frans Bothma and Superintendent Zethembe Chonco were amongst the police members who were killed during separate surveillance operations. Last month, Umlazi policeman Inspector Sibusiso Jerome Manyoni was shot and killed.

Naicker said that he did not have the names of the other victims.

“The large number of incidents where police were killed is worrying,” he said.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union’s national spokesman Benzi Soko said the union was disturbed by the latest killings, which he described as a phenomenon becoming a crisis in South Africa.

He said KZN has the highest number of policemen who were killed in the line of duty.
