Cops are ‘acting as private debt collectors’

2014-08-01 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg high court urgently ordered a court at Howick to hear a man’s bail application yesterday.

The order was granted by deputy KZN Judge President, Judge Achmat Jappie, following an urgent application brought on behalf of Howick resident Andre van der Watt who is accused of theft.

Van der Watt is understood to have appeared in the Howick Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, but the case was enrolled for hearing today.

Van der Watt stated in his founding affidavit that he was arrested on Wednesday (July 30) by the Howick police. “They have steadfastly refused to deal with me and my attorney’s request for an opportunity to apply for bail at any level,” he said, accusing police of engaging in tactics to “act as a private debt collector” and henchmen of the complainant in the case against him, who was a former employer.
