Cops arrest leading Dbn criminal

2014-01-07 00:00

THE police have arrested a man believed to be part of a criminal syndicate involved in armed robbery.

The police have called the 37-year-old — arrested on Sunday in a sting operation at Reunion Beach, Isipingo — one of Durban’s most wanted men.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the suspect is thought to be part of a gang of three who as recently as December 3 robbed a Mayville family at gunpoint, stealing jewellery, a laptop, cellphones, cash and a BMW car.

The same gang are believed to have scammed an Overport family out of more than R600 000, claiming to be low-interest loan specialists.

The Overport family paid out R645 000 as a guarantee and deposit, to the arrested man and his associates, believing the money was being placed in a secure trust.

The family were securing the loan to start a business. “We thought they were legitimate. They had a registered company, were known businessmen in Durban and during the transaction had a lawyer sit in all the meetings where we were reassured our deposit was being placed in a trust account,” said a family source.

The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today, charged with housebreaking, house robbery and theft by false pretences.
