Cops bust deposit scam

2012-11-15 00:00

POLICE in Pietermaritzburg have uncovered a bank deposit scam.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said a fraudster would contact a business and request to purchase an item.

“The fraudster then deposits a cheque, which is grossly over the required payment, into the victim’s bank account,” Jeevan said.

“He then contacts the victim and informs him that the secretary made a mistake and deposited the money into the wrong account and that they require the balance.

“The money, excluding the value of the item, is then deposited back into the fraudster’s account.

“In the mean time, the initial cheque deposited has not been honoured,” Jeevan added.

She highlighted a recent incident in which a businessman was scammed of R59 800.

She said anyone who had been scammed should call Lieutenant Colonel Narash Nandhlal at 033 845 2745 or 079 696 3712.
