2013-09-19 00:00

TRACKING the activities of a suspected drug dealer yesterday led police to a heroin lab set up in a flat in Pinetown.

Four suspects, aged 25 and 26, have been arrested and an unlicensed firearm was seized.

Police were investigating the activities of an alleged drug dealer who was supplying heroin to the greater Pinetown area, including kwaDabeka, Clermont, Wyebank, kwaNdengezi and Mariannhill, police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Members of the Chatsworth cluster crime intelligence and the Cavendish mobile task team went to the suspects’ flat on Mariannhill Road in Pinetown, and found three other persons on the premises who were cooking and packing the drugs for distribution. The members arrested the suspects and discovered 688 straws of drugs already packed as well as raw heroin powder.

The estimated street value of the drugs is R500 000. The heroin-based concoction is commonly known as “sugars” or “whoonga”. During the search of the premises, police found R75 630 in cash, which is suspected to be from the proceeds of drug sales.

Police also found several cellphones, three laptops and eight rounds of 9 mm ammunition. The suspects were charged with dealing in drugs and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.
