Cops carry on search of gutted Richmond municipal offices

2014-11-19 00:00

POLICE and forensics experts were still sifting through the charred remains of the Richmond municipal offices yesterday.

The municipal manager’s office and Richmond’s historic Memorial Hall were gutted after petrol bombs were thrown at the building early on Monday morning. The hall was built to commemorate the fallen heroes of World War 1.

Mayor Andrew Ragavaloo said the police told him there were no leads or suspects. “We are hoping to get more information from crime intelligence, who have been working in the town,” Ragavaloo said.

He said that it was business as usual at the municipality and they had found alternative office space for municipal manager Sibusiso Sithole. They had no choice but to keep going because the auditor-general is calling at the municipality today to start the audit process.

Ragavaloo said there were initial concerns that documents were destroyed, but these were being retrieved from the computer network.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said they had heard rumours that the fire was the result of factional battles within the party, but they had no proof that this was the case.
