POLICE have warned people against taking the law into their own hands after the vigilante murders of three people at Mondlo in Zululand this month.

Two people were attacked at Mondlo near Nquthu on Sunday by community members after they were accused of being criminals.

Sabelo Buthelezi (26) died at the scene and Mziwakhe Mathe was taken to hospital where he later died, the police said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said two counts of murder were opened and four suspects were arrested on these charges.

Zwane said on July 2 at Mkhumbane area, another man, Simphiwe Mazibuko (22), was beaten to death by a group of people after he was accused of stealing their property. He was assaulted with sjamboks, pangas and electric wires.

“He died at the scene as a result of severe injuries,” Zwane added.

Four suspects were arrested and charged with murder.

The police have condemned vigilantism and community members taking the law into their own hands.

A person is innocent until proven guilty in court, so the community members should not take the law into their own hands, police said.
