Cops end flight of four robbery suspects

2013-10-11 00:00

FOUR robbery suspects’ run from the police ended on Wednesday when they were caught at the kwaMashu Men’s Hostel in Durban.

The men, aged between 25 and 32, were allegedly also found in possession of three unlicensed firearms — a 9 mm pistol, a revolver and a homemade shotgun.

The Inanda task team and Nkandla detectives arrested the men, charged with robbery, and linked to five more robberies in the province.

According to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, the five armed men held up employees of Bergville Spar last Friday.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken by the men before they fled the scene. Police immediately responded and a vehicle chase and shoot-out ensued between the suspects and the police.

One suspect was shot and he later died. An unlicensed firearm was found in his possession. Four other suspects managed to escape. It was also discovered that the suspects’ vehicle was stolen in Bellair.

“A case of armed robbery was opened at Bergville police station and the four suspects, who were arrested yesterday, were identified as those responsible for the Bergville Spar robbery”, said Zwane. “The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing and the suspects are due to appear in court soon.”
