Cops foil bakkie hijack

2010-07-16 00:00

DRAMA unfolded in the KwaXimba area of Camperdown when four armed robbers hijacked a bakkie that was waiting to transport pensioners yesterday morning.

Sbonelo Ngcobo, a resident who witnessed the drama, said: “We heard a woman screaming for help and that is when the security officers fired warning shots, because they thought that it might be people trying make off with pensioners’ money.”

He said he saw four armed robbers flee in the bakkie.

“We were fortunate because the Msunduzi police station is nearby, so the shots alerted the police, who came to the rescue and they were able to recover the stolen vehicle,” said Ngcobo.

Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed the account, and added that after the police had given chase and the hijackers had abandoned the vehicle, police established that two of the men had boarded a taxi. “Police officials stopped the taxi just before it reached the taxi rank and found the two men inside.”

Police found two 9 mm pistols on the men.

“The two men were arrested for car jacking and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

“They were positively identified by the hijack victims. Police are still searching for the remaining two men,” said Naicker.
