Cops in court on poaching charges

2012-07-21 00:00

TWO Margate police constables who were arrested for poaching last month made a brief appearance in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Sifiso Mbutho (34) and Goodman Shange (39) are charged with illegal hunting and defeating the ends of justice, after they allegedly shot a pregnant buck in the Uvongo area.

The buck was shot in the neck and died shortly after.

The matter was adjourned until October 26 for outstanding ballistics results and further investigations.

Service pistols and a rifle were allegedly found on the fully uniformed constables at the time of their arrest.

They were allegedly travelling in a police vehicle.

Margate officers arrested the two after farmers, alerted by a gunshot, investigated and apprehended the constables.

An internal disciplinary hearing is continuing against the two officers, said police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka.

Both were released without bail after their first court appearance on June 25. Mfeka confirmed that the policemen are still at work.

“They have been given office-based duties at Margate police station.” The officers are said to have blemish-free records.
