Cops irk Thomas Street traders

2010-10-26 00:00

BUSINESS owners in Thomas Street between Langalibalele and Church streets believe the lane is over-policed when other streets in the city are in greater need of visible traffic policing.

Six traffic officers were policing the street on Saturday morning.

This follows regular policing during the week where the municipality is yet to finish painting red lines and demarcate loading zones.

While they acknowledge that the traffic police are doing their job, business owners feel that this is selective policing, and allege that officers consider the area to be a soft target to dish out fines.

Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said the traffic police in Thomas Street have been deployed in response to complaints from businesses and residents around Thomas Street, which he said is identified by the traffic department as a “hot spot”.
