Cops on alert for fraudster who cons people over 50

POLICE are appealing to people who were allegedly defrauded by a local woman to contact them.

Pietermaritzburg detective services are investigating 16 counts of fraud totalling millions of rand, spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said.

She said the woman, whose name is known to The Witness, is alleged to have defrauded a number of victims of their life savings and inheritance.

One of her victims said he was approached by the woman to invest in a business. Having known her for years, the man agreed.

However, he said, he later discovered that he and other people had been scammed.

Jeevan said the woman had made a number of unsuspecting people surrender investment policies unknowingly.

“She tells people that she will invest their money elsewhere, and makes them sign documents under false pretences.

“Unknowingly, they were surrendering their policies.

“In other incidents, the woman would approach her victims as a broker for well-known investment companies and promise them great returns if they invested with her. In one incident, she managed to swindle R250 000 from a victim’s inheritance,” said Jeevan.

“Police believe that over 20 people may have fallen victim to the scam. She is believed to be operating in the Pietermaritzburg area and targets persons of all age groups, but especially persons over 50 and who are close to or on retirement.”

Anyone who may have fallen victim to the scam should call Warrant Officer Frans Bezuidenhout at 033 845 2770 or 083 383 7984.
