Cops shoot robbery suspect

A SUSPECT wanted in connection with a business robbery in the Pietermaritzburg CBD was shot and seriously wounded by police on Tuesday night.

Midlands police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said the suspect was in a serious but stable condition.

She said Pietermaritzburg police discovered he was in Sacca informal settlement near Mkondeni. “The suspect noticed the arrival of the police and fled to the back of the house,” said Jeevan.

“The members immediately requested that the suspect surrender, however; he refused to do so.”

She said officers then noticed movement from the back of the house and in the darkness saw the suspect emerge with a firearm pointed at them.

“One of the members immediately produced his service pistol and fired a shot at the suspect, hitting him in his upper body, seriously wounding him.”

An unlicensed loaded .38 special revolver with four rounds of ammunition was found in the suspect’s possession. He was linked to a robbery in Church Street at about 4 pm on Monday.

Store owner Zeshan Mahomed (26) and his employees were inside when three unknown men, one with a firearm, entered and held them up.

One suspect jumped over the counter and removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the till while the other two took 96 cellphones from a display cabinet.

The suspects then removed the victims’ wallets, forced them to undress, took all their clothes and fled. No one was injured.

Cases of business robbery, attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition are being investigated.
