Corpse: MEC vows probe

2010-05-19 00:00

KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo vowed to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding a decomposing body that was found at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.

It is believed that the young woman was found wrapped in a blanket in one of the toilets earlier this week. Her body was in an advanced stage of decomposition when it was discovered. Police are still trying to determine the cause of death and her identity.

Dhlomo and his team visited the hospital yesterday.

“It is unfortunate and regrettable that this incident happened in a hospital’s premises. At this stage it is not clear what really happened, but it is clear that there are areas where we need to strengthen, such as patrolling throughout the premises,” he said.

Dhlomo said the district manager and the acting chief executive officer will work with the police to identify the body as soon as possible.

Members of the public who may want to identify the body are asked to visit the department’s Gale Street mortuary or call 031 305 4472/88 between 7.30 am and 3.30 pm.
