Corruption: hospital HR official removed

2014-04-03 00:00

A HUMAN resources official at the Greytown Hospital was yesterday removed amid allegations of corruption, said the KZN Department of Health.

In a statement, the department said MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo visited the hospital yesterday and informed the community members who recently demonstrated at the hospital, that the official had now been placed in uMzinyathi health district office.

Last month, angry community members blocked the gates of Greytown Hospital protesting against the tendency of the hospital to employ people from outside the district, even for menial posts. The department said the community accused the official of demanding bribes for jobs and since most people are unemployed, locals are left out as no one can afford the money demanded.

Community members said while they accept the need for scarce skilled people to run health services, and that those professionals have to be appointed from all over the country, they do not understand why the cleaners and porters have to come from outside the area as well.
