Cosmos make intentions clear with back-to-back wins

FORMER Premier Soccer League side Jomo Cosmos have made clear their intentions of bouncing back to the elite set-up by registering back-to-back wins that have firmly placed them atop the National First Division Inland Stream log.

Jomo Sono’s side, who were relegated last season, first picked up maximum points by beating University of Pretoria 2-0 on Wednesday, before adding more full points at the expense of United FC, whom they downed 2-1 on Saturday.

Both games were at Cosmos’s home at Makhulong Stadium. Last week’s wins were preceded by a 2-0 victory recorded over Dynamos in the season opener away in Giyani two weeks ago.

In the weekend game, Ezenkosi’s goals came from Ousmane Berthe and Katlego Loke, while former Bloemfontein Celtic, Santos and Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembile Kanono got a consolation goal for the visitors from the Free State.

Commenting on the PSL website about the United FC game, Cosmos skipper Avril Phali said: “They came for a draw and made it tough for us, but once we got the first goal we knew we could win it.

“We saw that Kanono was giving us problems and we had to close him down quicker. I think after the second goal we relaxed too much and this allowed United back in the game.

“But we are happy with the three points and taking it one game at a time.”

In the Coastal Stream, it was a weekend of mixed fortunes as Thanda Royal Zulu collected their first point of the season, while Nathi Lions returned from Port Elizabeth with their tails between their legs.

Thanda, whose purchase of many ex-PSL players raised expectations about their promotion chances, were disappointingly held 1-1 at home by Carara Kicks in Richards Bay, and continue to prop up the bottom of the table.

Interestingly, Kicks had come off a 6-1 thumping by Lions, who were brought down to earth by Bay United in PE at the weekend.

Thanda, who are said to be considering hiring former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Paul Dolezar, owing to Professor Ngubane’s unimpressive start to the season, have signed journeyman goalkeeper Oscar Ramogoadi on a six-month contract.

The former youth international was last on Mpumalanga Black Aces’ books and now teams up with former team manager, Peter Kotroulis, who is occupying the same position at the Swedish-backed outfit.
