Costa salvage man speaks

2014-09-22 00:00

A FORMER pupil of Kearsney College and salvage master of the ill-fated Costa Concordia ship, Nick Sloane, will be the guest speaker at the school’s annual Speech Day and Prizegiving on October 3.

Sloane (53) who was born in Kitwe, Zambia, steered one of the largest and most complex maritime salvages ever when he assisted in refloating the cruise liner Costa Concordia – which is the length of almost three football fields – in July this year.

The Costa Concordia, ran aground off the Tuscan island of Isola del Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people. It was successfully towed to the port of Genoa for scrapping.
