Council members not invited to meeting

FOLLOWING the protests at the Professor Nyembezi Centre in Church Street on Friday by ward 19 and 35 residents, more have come forward to tell of their disappointment in the ANC over the handling of the nomination process for councilors ahead of the May 18 elections.

A disgruntled ward council member told The Witness how members of Mountain Rise — which falls under ward 35 along with Sobantu Village and Lincoln Meade — were not invited to attend the meetings to nominate candidates for the local elections.

Sobantu residents say they were given only 24 hours notice that nominations and elections would take place. This meant that many were unable to attend the meetings to vote for candidates.

The residents gathered at the Professor Nyembezi Centre were waiting outside the meeting for ANC leaders. The meeting, which was attended by ANC provincial chairperson and premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize and ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala, was called to deal with their complaints.

The protesters said that they wanted Sandile Dlamini to head their ward, instead of Thandi Matiwane, who had been put forward by the ANC.

A Sobantu resident told The Witness that the ANC leadership decided at the Friday night meeting that residents would have to write down their complaints and submit the document to the ANC. After a month, the ANC would investigate all claims, and if the complaints about Matiwane were valid she would be removed. The ANC, despite numerous phone calls and e-mails, had not commented by the time of going to print.

With only six weeks until elections, the residents have very little hope that this will actually happen and have threatened to disrupt the expected meeting between Zikalala and the branch executive committee this weekend.
