‘Council vehicles used for electioneering’

2011-04-29 00:00

OPPOSITION parties yesterday claimed to have proof that municipal employees and municipal vehicles are being used for party electioneering.

Both the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party said they have received complaints and have evidence that council vehicles are being used for private purposes and for party electioneering.

Msunduzi administrator Sibusiso Sithole was asked in yesterday’s Exco meeting to confirm that there are regulations prohibitng such conduct and if he could give directives to councillors and staff.

Sithole said that only municipal employees entrusted with running elections by the Independent Electoral Commission can use municipal vehicles. No one is allowed to campaign for a political party on council time or using council vehicles.

He urged people with information to report the abuse, saying, “There is a case we are currently working on of a municipal employee allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. We are tracking this case as we speak. Council assets are council assets and we can’t abuse them.”

Dolo Zondi of the IFP said he has seen municipal vehicles and staff campaigning and has photographic evidence that he will pass on to the administrator.

Sithole said he would welcome the evidence. He warned officials at the meeting that such abuse of council assests should not be happening. “As heads of your departments you should be the first people who should be preventing this. If as officials you are not doing your job, I will charge you as an accomplice.”
