Councillor ‘demolished hostel’

2009-11-10 00:00

AN ANC councillor in the Mpofana Municipality has allegedly demolished a hostel in the municipality’s Bruntville area.

IFP councillor Mthembeni Majola alleged yesterday that councillor Sifiso Mkhize (ANC), who is the ward three councillor incorporating Bruntville, is behind the demolition of the hostel that allegedly accommodates mainly IFP supporters. According to Majola, the demolition began at the weekend.

Majola claims that Mkhize’s bodyguards were chipping off the hostel’s building materials. “When we asked why the hostel is being demolished, we [were] told that the demolition is to make way for the building of family units,” said Majola, adding that, if the demolition is allowed to continue, 900 people will be displaced.

Mkhize, said Majola, has not provided alternative accommodation for the hostel dwellers, adding that the hostel residents were opposed to the demolition.

Mkhize distanced himself from the demolition. He said that he never sent anybody to take the hostel apart. “[Majola] is lying. I have never said that the hostel should be demolished,” he said.

Residents at the hostel, said Mkhize, have been vandalising the hostel and this has been going on for more than a year.

Mpofana Municipality Mayor Mncedisi Mthethwa said that, if there are allegations that a councillor or any other person is demolishing the hostel, those people must be reported to the police. He said that he will be meeting with the hostel residents tomorrow to establish what is going on at the hostel.
