Councillor is ignoring us, say Copesville marchers

2012-06-11 00:00

PEOPLE from Copesville, Haniville and surrounding areas took to the streets yesterday to protest what they claim is neglect by their municipal councillor.

The largely young crowd used burning tyres to barricade the main road between Eastwood and the Greytown road going through Copesville.

They said Ward 29 councillor Thandi Ndlovu had been neglecting her duties and ignoring her constituency.

The Witness could not reach her for comment last night.

“The last time we saw the councillor was either in February or March before the elections last year,” said community leader Sipho Malope. “Ever since she was elected, we have not seen her once.”

He complained that she was neglecting her duties after having agreed to hold monthly meetings to report back to the community.

The protesters were also upset about her “lofty promises”, he said.

“Before she was elected, Ndlovu had promised the community that houses will be built and basic services such as water and electricity will be installed in the area.

“None of that has happened,” said Malope.

“As we speak, the Honeyville area [in Copesville], which has electricity, has been without electricity for the past three days and without water for the whole day.

“The people cannot cook.”

A resident who declined to be named said the situation was aggravated by the fact that Ndlovu was no longer taking their phone calls.

The protesters marched from the Copesville community hall to the Copesville satellite police station where they handed over a memorandum giving details of their grievances.
