A LADYSMITH man who murdered a couple after an argument over soccer, was handed two life sentences last week.

The Ladysmith High Court also sentenced Network Sanele Dladla (20) to six months for theft and 18 months for indecent assault.

Buthelezi murdered Mthetheni Dladla (33) and his girlfriend, Sibisiwe Mavis Sithole (42), in Msuluzi on February 24.

The court heard that Buthelezi hacked Dladla to death with an axe. Sithole’s body was recovered from a nearby dam. Buthelezi was arrested three days later.

The murders were a culmination of an argument between Buthelezi and Dladla over soccer during the day. At about 5 pm, Dladla decided to go home, but Buthelezi and a young man, who was not present during the argument, followed Dladla. They found him preparing to go to bed and asked him for tobacco. After giving it to them, Dladla fell asleep.

Buthelezi ordered the young man to rape Sithole, but he refused. After seeing Buthelezi picking up the axe, the young man tried to wake Dladla and ran away.

Later, Dladla was found dead and investigations led police to Sithole’s body. The Director of Public Prosecutions found that the young man, who was turned in to the police by his parents, did not participate in committing the crimes.
