Couple overpaid by over half a million but sitting tight

2015-02-10 00:00

A COUPLE who went on a spending spree when the husband’s bank account was overpaid by R563 000 in January had their bank accounts frozen by urgent court order.

Instead of transferring R5 687,61 to the man’s Capitec account, the man’s employer did not add the comma, and transferred R568 761.

Michael Mochudi, MD at Motsi Civils and Plant Hire in Welkom, said in a court statement when he discovered his error, he immediately called Phemelo Mothupi, a worker in Kathu, to get the money back.

Mothupi said he had already spent the money and would not return it.

Mochudi’s bank, FNB, said it would take up to five days to stop the EFT once all the forms had been filled in.

Meanwhile, Mothupi transferred R400 000 to his wife Phemelo’s Capitec account and she placed R260 000 in an investment account, said Mochudi. The couple also bought groceries for a few thousand rand.

The case will come before the court on March 5.
