Court: Cop on trial

2008-07-23 00:00

An Estcourt police captain, Makhosonke Charles Zondi (40), who is charged with shooting dead the “wrong man” following an alleged altercation at Smero, Pietermaritzburg, last August, was granted bail of R5 000 pending the resumption of his trial. The state did not oppose bail.

He has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Themba Khumalo on August 26, 2007 and alleges that the shooting occurred in self defence.

The state alleges that Zondi had gone in search of another man — Nkosinathi Bhengu — who allegedly stabbed him with a screwdriver during an altercation, and that he shot Khumalo in error when Khumalo answered his knock at the door.

The case is provisionally set down to resume on November 3.
