Court: Man fined R20 000 for hunting illegally

2008-10-28 00:00

A 25-year-old man, Muhammad A. Karim, has been sentenced to pay a fine of R20 000 (or two years’ imprisonment), half of which was conditionally suspended for five years on charges arising from the illegal hunting of prohibited game — two nyala buck — and ordinary game (a grey duiker) in January this year.

In addition, Karim was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, which was conditionally suspended, for unlawful possession of 342 rounds of a variety of ammunition. The ammunition and game carcasses are believed to have been found in his possession on Nyonende Farm at Bishopstowe.

The sentences imposed by regional magistrate Henry Sithole yesterday were the result of a plea bargain between the defence and state.
