Court: Sathar accused's bail conditions altered

2008-04-15 00:00

Bail conditions for Azeem Yunus Mahomed, the Estcourt man accused of shooting at Estcourt mother Sarah Sathar, her daughter and their driver on the N3 in May last year, were amended in the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday following complaints by the Sathar family that they felt threatened after Mahomed was allowed to return to Estcourt after he suffered a heart attack.

Previously, a condition of Mahomed’s R20 000 bail was that he was not allowed to enter the magisterial district of Estcourt.

Sathar’s son, Mohamed Shuaib Sathar, is on trial for the murder of Safia Mahomed, sister of Azeem Yunus Mahomed.

Judge Piet Koen ruled that Mahomed may not leave his residence in Beechwood Road in Estcourt except at specified times to visit the mosque, to report to the police and to attend to his business at Macksons stores. He is not allowed to enter or drive on Gilbey Road, where members of the Sathar family reside.

Mahomed may not leave Estcourt without notifying the investigating officer assigned to the case in writing, and may not communicate with any state witness.

Mahomed is charged with the murder of the driver, Vinod Ramsarup, and the attempted murder of Sarah Sathar and her eight-year-old daughter.
