Court postpones bail hearing in mutilated baby case

GATES to the Matatiele Magistrate’s Court were locked yesterday and visitors were screened ahead of a bail application for two suspects accused of mutilating a nine-month-old baby.

Protesters, including members of the ANC Women’s League and the town’s mayor, called on the court to deny the pair bail.

Siyabonga Khuzwayo (25) and Sadi Jabare (36) each face a charge of attempted murder with aggravating circumstances.

They were allegedly behind the horrific mutilation of a little girl in September last year when the child was only nine months old.

The toddler had her nose, lips, an ear, a thumb and finger chopped off. She was then burnt, leaving her face and left arm badly scarred.

Police arrested Jabare on Monday last week. Khuzwayo, who left Matatiele soon after the attack, was arrested in KwaDukuza, north of Durban, on Tuesday the week before.

The bail hearing was postponed until today because the docket was still with the Director of Public Prosecutions in Pietermaritzburg.

Matatiele Mayor Ntombovuyo Nkopane, who led the protest, said the protesters were not discouraged by the postponement of the case.

“Even tomorrow it is the same story. We will picket to ensure they don’t get bail.”

Last week the child was assessed by two top plastic surgeons who will begin the first in a lengthy series of operations, starting in about four months’ time.
