Court reverses Durban beachfront deal

2010-09-27 00:00

THE controversial sale of the Natal Command site on Durban’s beachfront to film-maker Anant Singh has been set aside by the Pietermartizburg High Court, the Sunday Tribune reported yesterday.

The sale sparked controversy because it was felt that Singh was allegedly favoured in the deal as the sale price was set at a R15 million and it was believed the site was valued at a much higher price. According to the paper, the court handed down a highly critical judgment on Thursday, declaring the deal null and void.

Judge Jerome Mnguni said he found the sale process “had been contaminated” and ordered the city and the MEC for Local Government, Housing and Traditional Affairs to pay the costs of the court application to reverse the sale.

Pietermaritzburg businessman Karamchand “Sunny” Gayadin brought the application.
