Court shown chilling video footage of fatal stabbing in PMB hotel

THE Pietermaritzburg Regional Court was shown chilling video footage yesterday of a man setting upon a security guard without any apparent reason and stabbing him in the foyer of the Value Lodge hotel in West Street.

On trial for the murder of the guard, Musa Zulu (26), is a Sinathing man, Sabelo Gasa (22).

Gasa has pleaded not guilty to the murder before regional magistrate Rose Mogwera, and denies he is the person who stabbed and killed Zulu in the early hours of March 29, 2011.

But Captain Malcolm Gwynn testified that the features of the killer on the video are discernible and he looks like Gasa, although the killer wore a woollen hat.

State prosecutor Rene Padayachee said a Safe City camera operative would be called to testify that a snapshot was taken from the video footage and that camera operators were asked to watch for the killer on the city’s streets.

That is what led to Gasa’s arrest. The video footage of the murder was captured by CCTV cameras in the hotel. A receptionist can be seen apparently dozing on her desk behind a glass barrier, while Zulu is seated near the doorway.

A man, alleged to be Gasa, enters and stops to chat to the guard.

After awhile, Zulu approaches the man and, following a brief conversation, the man leaves the premises. Shortly afterwards he re-enters the foyer, and makes a beeline for Zulu. The killer lifts his arm high and a knife glints as he starts to stab the guard.

The case is expected to continue today.
