Court tells cops, wives to lay off

2010-03-08 00:00

MAGISTRATE Divesh Mootheram criticised the alleged intimidatory conduct of Mountain Rise police officers whose wives are among six people charged with the aggravated assault of a schoolgirl (14) at her school on February 22.

The conduct that angered Mootheram allegedly occurred at the police station, in the court and in the court building.

At the police station, the accused were released with a warning. However, when they appeared in court on February 24, Mootheram revoked that order, instructing that the adult accused be held in custody as the charge they face — aggravated assault of a minor — is a serious Schedule five offence.

The adult accused were granted bail of R1 000 each on Friday. They are Sunitha Williams (34), Anita Williams (18), Joan Enock (25), Teleshe Henry (19) and Rajispierre Haripersadh (27). A 15-year-old girl is also one of the accused.

The complainant was taken to a district surgeon who treated her for injuries allegedly caused by kicks, punches, slaps and scratches.

The investigating officer, Inspector Sean Knox, told the court that the victim was assaulted by one of the accused at the school gate, and then the others joined in. A teacher intervened and took her away.

The victim pointed out the suspects.

Mootheram ordered that they refrain from interfering with the investigation and stay away from the complainant.

The case was postponed to March 18.
